Gutter guards

Gutter guards that keep your gutters from clogging

If your house sits under big trees, you know the routine: clean the gutters, wait for the next storm, clean them again. Guards keep the leaves out of the gutter so the water can get through.

The short answer

BNH Roofing installs Bulldog gutter guards: aluminum covers that close off the top of the gutter, attach to the gutter and fascia rather than the roof, and carry a registered 25-year limited warranty that the gutters stay clog-free. They go on new seamless gutters or on existing gutters that are clean and properly sloped. Houston checks yours at a free estimate and prices it both ways.

Why clogged gutters matter

A clogged gutter doesn’t just overflow. Water backs up behind it, soaks the fascia board the gutter hangs on, and can work its way under the roof edge. Over time, that’s rotted wood, gutters pulling away from the house, and water dumping beside the foundation instead of out the downspout.

What Bulldog guards are

Bulldog guards are aluminum covers that drop into the gutter and close off the top, so leaves, needles and seeds stay out while water passes through a fine filter. They attach to the gutter and the fascia board, not the roof, so your shingles aren’t touched. They come in white, black and dark bronze to match the gutters, and fit 5″ and 6″ K-style gutters like ours.

Who they’re worth it for

  • Homes under big trees, where gutters fill up every fall and after every storm.
  • Two-story homes, where cleaning gutters means a tall ladder.
  • Anyone who’d rather not clean gutters at all.

If your gutters rarely clog, you may not need them, and Houston will say so.

New gutters or the ones you have

Guards only work on gutters that drain, and Bulldog’s warranty requires gutters that are cleaned, properly sloped and draining before the guards go on. If yours are sagging, leaking at the seams or pulling away, putting guards on them is money spent on a gutter that still fails. Houston checks the gutters, the hangers and the fascia behind them, and prices guards on what you have and on new seamless gutters, so you can compare.

The warranty

Bulldog guarantees that properly installed guards keep the gutters and downspouts from clogging for 25 years. It’s a limited warranty that has to be registered within 30 days of installation, and it transfers with proof of transfer if you sell. Leaves sitting on top of the guards are yours to clear; the inside of the gutter isn’t.

Questions

Common questions

What gutter guards do you install?

Bulldog gutter guards: aluminum covers, made in the USA, that close off the top of the gutter and let water through a fine filter. They come with a registered 25-year limited warranty that the gutters stay clog-free.

Can you put guards on the gutters I already have?

Usually. Bulldog fits existing K-style gutters as well as new ones. The warranty requires gutters that are clean and properly sloped, with clear downspouts, so Houston checks yours first. If they’re sagging, leaking or pulling away, he’ll price new seamless gutters with guards too, so you can compare.

Will I ever have to clean them?

Not the inside of the gutter. Leaves and needles can collect on top of the guard, and those may need brushing or blowing off now and then, usually from the ground or a short ladder. That’s the trade: no more scooping out the gutter.

Do they attach to my roof?

No. Bulldog guards attach to the gutter and the fascia board. Nothing gets nailed into the roof or slid under your shingles.

Do guards cost a lot more than gutters alone?

Seamless gutter work, guards included, runs about $4 to $16 per foot depending on size, guards, downspouts and how the house is laid out. Houston gives you an itemized price, with and without guards, at a free estimate.

Can guards go on the same day as new gutters?

Yes. When we install new seamless gutters, the guards go on in the same visit.
